AMIT STUDENT TRIUMPHS IN 2003 INTERNATIONAL BIBLE CONTEST
May 27, 2003......Moran Gomri, an 11th grade student at the AMIT Ulpana High School in Beersheva, has won the 40th International Bible Quiz. The Bible Quiz took place in Jerusalem on May 7th, Israel Independence Day, and contestants included 60 teens from 27 nations.
As international champion, Moran has been awarded a full scholarship to Tel Aviv University.
"In her quiet, unassuming way," commented Michael Benson, principal of the AMIT Ulpana in Beersheva, "Moran proceeded with outstanding persistence and devotion to her goal. The educational staff of the Ulpana and her friends supported, encouraged and stood by her throughout, and representatives of both groups were with her in Jerusalem for the competition."
Moran is the oldest of four children and has been a student at the AMIT Ulpana since 7th grade. She comes from a Sephardic family of very modest means which, despite economic difficulties, has made the quality education of their children a top priority. An outstanding student, Moran was awarded a certificate of excellence in 9th grade in "recognition of her diligence and her serious regard for her studies," and a second certificate in 10th grade for "her conduct, both religious and general, that serves as a role model for her peers."
"These two certificates," noted Principal Benson, "accurately reflect Moran's nature - serious and diligent toward her studies and very modest in her conduct. She devoted all her time, energy and strength to preparing to compete in the world competition, as a representative of the State of Israel."
Moran previously competed in the Bible Quiz in 10th grade. She won second place in the regional competition, but did not succeed at the national level.
"But she didn't give up," Mr. Benson pointed out, "and decided to compete this year."
Moran has now returned to her studies at the Ulpana, where she is concentrating in computer sciences, the Bible (of course!) and the Oral Law. The teaching staff has arranged to help her privately to complete the study material she has missed while studying for the Bible Quiz so as to ensure her success in the Bagrut (college entrance) exams.
The AMIT Ulpana in Beersheva enrolls almost 600 girls in grades 7 to12. The school day runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and encompasses a full curriculum with an emphasis on Judaic studies. Twinned with a yeshiva high school in Montreal, Canada, the Ulpana students work on tzedaka projects in both places, and also participate in a dialogue program for tolerance and understanding with students at the secular high school next to the Ulpana campus.
The AMIT Ulpana won the Teachers Union Education Prize for 2001 for outstanding achievement in promoting tolerance and understanding between religious and secular students. Some 90 per cent of the eligible students earned Bagrut certificates in 2002.
