PRINCIPAL OF AMIT GUSH DAN NAMED WEXNER-ISRAEL FELLOW AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY
July 11, 2003......Gil Pereg, principal of the AMIT Ginsburg Technological Institute-Gush Dan in Ramat Gan, Israel, has been named a Wexner-Israel Fellow. Mr. Pereg, the first Israeli academic to receive a Wexner-Israel Fellowship, will be spending the 2003-04 academic year at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
"There is no doubt," commented Dr. Amnon Eldar, director-general of the AMIT network of schools and facilities in Israel, "that Gil, a successful principal, has brought great honor to AMIT. I am convinced that Gil's studies at Harvard will enrich him and that he will return an even better principal."
Mr. Pereg is one of nine individuals chosen for the 2003-04 Wexner-Israel Program, a partnership of The Wexner Foundation and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. He will pursue studies for a Master's degree in public administration at the Kennedy School and is planning to take courses focusing on management, philosophy and education.
Founded in 1989, the Wexner-Israel Fellowship Program enrolls up to 10 outstanding Israeli public officials each year. The goal of the program is to provide Israel's next generation of public leaders with advanced training in management and leadership development, thus enhancing the quality of democracy and the institutional vitality of Israel's public sector. During the course of the academic year, The Wexner Foundation sponsors a number of leadership institutes and seminars designed to supplement the formal academic studies at the Kennedy School.
Alumni of the Wexner-Israel Program include Ambassador Avi Gil, director- general of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ohad Marani, director-general of Israel's
Ministry of Finance; Judge Daniela Cherizli of the Tel Aviv Magistrate Court; Dr. Yair Birnbaum, director of the Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital; and Adi Nir Sagi, chief psychologist for Israel's Ministry of Education.
Mr. Pereg was educated at Bar-Ilan University where he received degrees in law and Jewish philosophy. He served in the Intelligence Corps of the Israel Defense Forces and began his career at the AMIT Gush Dan High School as a teacher of Talmud and Jewish philosophy. He was the founder and first principal of the AMIT Gush Dan Junior High School, and in 2001 was named principal of the high school as well.
In 2002, Mr. Pereg was awarded a Certificate of Distinction by the High School Teachers Organization for work in promoting co-existence between various segments of Israeli society. Under his leadership in 2001, AMIT Gush Dan High School ranked fourth place nationally in the number of students (94.4 per cent) passing the country's matriculation examinations. The following year, the school moved up to third place, with a 95.4% success rate in the national matriculation exams.
Mr. Pereg and his wife and child reside in Tel Aviv. They are looking forward to the birth of a second child in September, in the United States. Mrs. Dana Pereg earned a PhD in psychology at Bar-Ilan University and previously spent time in the Boston area working on a joint project on Jewish identity between Brandeis University and Bar-Ilan.
The AMIT Ginsburg Technological Institute-Gush Dan encompasses junior and senior high schools offering a curriculum in science, technology and Judaic studies in cooperation with Bar-Ilan University. The school enrolls more than 450 boys, ages 12 to 18. Students can take advanced courses which earn college credits and are prepared for careers in scientific and technological research and in the electronic and biotechnological industries.
