ELLEN R. HELLMAN NAMED CHAIR OF AMIT ISRAEL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

New York, September 12, 2005...... Ellen R. Hellman, formerly a resident of Seattle, Washington, has been named chair of the Israel Executive Committee of AMIT. Mrs. Hellman and her husband, Dr. John Hellman, made aliya to Jerusalem in August 1999.

“While I was somewhat active in AMIT in Seattle,” Mrs. Hellman commented, “my time and efforts were spread among quite a few organizations. I pledged that when I made aliya, in honor of my mother, who was born in Israel, I would concentrate my efforts on AMIT. I am thrilled that I have been able to keep that promise.”

Mrs. Hellman is a third generation life member of AMIT. Her grandmother Rose Russak was brought into AMIT by Bessie Gotsfeld, the organization’s founder. Her mother Adina Russak served as president of the AMIT Aviva Chapter in Seattle. Together with her father and siblings, Mrs. Hellman recently dedicated a garden at AMIT Kfar Batya in memory of her mother.

A graduate of Barnard College in New York City, Mrs. Hellman served in many leadership capacities during her years in Seattle. She was president of the Shirley Jassen Chapter of AMIT, chaired the Young Leadership Division, the Jewish Education Council and the Women’s Division Campaign of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, and was president of the Federation’s Women’s Division as well as of the Seattle Hebrew Academy. She also was a vice president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and served on the boards of the Northwest Yeshiva High School and of Congregation Bikur Cholim Machzikay Hadath. On the national level, Mrs. Hellman was a member of the United Jewish Appeal Women’s Young Leadership Cabinet and the Council of Jewish Federations Women’s Division Board.

Mrs. Hellman and her husband are the parents of a son and a daughter (who is also an AMIT life member) and have two grandchildren. Dr. John Hellman is a clinical psychologist.

AMIT enables Israel's youth to realize their potential and strengthens Israeli society by educating and nurturing children from diverse backgrounds within a framework of academic excellence, religious values and Zionist ideals.

AMIT educates and cares for Israel’s youth, including the most vulnerable. More than three quarters of AMIT students cope with educational, psychological, economic and/or social risk factors. AMIT approaches each child as an individual, maximizing his or her potential, and enabling our students to become vital, productive members of Israeli society. The AMIT schools promote religious tolerance, service to the state and the recognition that every child is blessed with unique talents and abilities. Founded in 1925, AMIT operates more than 60 schools, youth villages, surrogate family residences and other programs, constituting Israel’s only government-recognized network of religious Jewish education incorporating academic and technological studies.
