AMIT 2006 PRESIDENT’S EVENING A MAJOR SUCCESS
New York City, March 29, 2006...... The 2006 President’s Evening in New York City featured the opportunity to tour a major museum, sample delicacies from a multi-ethnic buffet, and learn more about President’s Circle, the most important donor group supporting AMIT. It also featured one major surprise – the challenge by event Chairs Ellen and Meyer Koplow to match their impromptu donation of $50,000. Not only was the Koplow challenge met; as new pledges continued to be announced, Mr. Koplow raised his challenge to $75,000, which was handily matched in record time.
“Our President’s Evening is always a wonderful event,” commented National President Jan Schechter. “But raising an unexpected $150,000 for our schools and students in Israel has elevated this occasion to a different level.”

The 2006 President’s Evening was held at the Museum of the City of New York. Exhibitions on display included “Mayor Ed Koch and the City,” a retrospective of his three terms as mayor; “The Mythic City,” a collection of striking black and white photographs taken from 1925 to 1940; and “Still New York,” 18 watercolors by Frederick Brosen, his first solo museum exhibit in New York.
During the evening’s program, Chair Ellen Koplow introduced New Generation Board of Directors Vice President Suzanne Doft who spoke about the importance of President’s Circle. Mrs. Doft, together with National Vice President Barbara Nordlicht, chairs President’s Circle.
“Membership in President’s Circle,” Mrs. Doft told the more than 100 major donors assembled, “allows us to translate our beliefs into direct support benefiting thousands of children in Israel. Our contributions to President’s Circle do not go to construct buildings; we don’t get a plaque in a classroom or our name on a computer center. Rather, our funds go directly to support the basic operations of the AMIT Network – all the daily services essential to assuring the success of our schools and the education and proper care of the children. And what could be more important that that?” she concluded.
In her remarks, National President Jan Schechter focused on a new program launched by the AMIT Network in Israel, Tochnit Shmonim. Its purpose is to raise the percentage of students passing the bagrut, (matriculation exams) in every AMIT high school to 80 percent.
“When you join President’s Circle,” Mrs. Schechter noted, “or provide AMIT with other, unrestricted funds, please remember that your commitment is directly funding programs like Tochnit Shmonim, that you are making it possible for more and more of our students to pass the bagrut, and to go on to a bright and better future.”
Arnold Gerson, executive vice president, concluded the very successful evening by summing up the definition of AMIT as “values, excellence, compassion and impact.”
“AMIT has an extraordinary impact on Israeli society and within the communities where our facilities are located,” he pointed out. “There is a lot of hope, a lot of dreams in our schools, and it’s up to us to make it all a reality.”
AMIT enables Israel's youth to realize their potential and strengthens Israeli society by educating and nurturing children from diverse backgrounds within a framework of academic excellence, religious values and Zionist ideals.
AMIT educates and cares for Israel’s youth, including the most vulnerable. More than three quarters of AMIT students cope with educational, psychological, economic and/or social risk factors. AMIT approaches each child as an individual, maximizing his or her potential, and enabling our students to become vital, productive members of Israeli society. The AMIT schools promote religious tolerance, service to the state and the recognition that every child is blessed with unique talents and abilities. Founded in 1925, AMIT operates more than 60 schools, youth villages, surrogate family residences and other programs, constituting Israel’s only government-recognized network of religious Jewish education incorporating academic and technological studies.
