POST-WAR: ANGLO OLIM CONTINUE STRONG TRADITION OF PHILANTHROPY

Upcoming AMIT Events to Raise Funds and Awareness Focus on Post War Repair of Schools and Assistance to Students in the North

New York City, September 12, 2006...... AMIT – a network of more than 60 schools, youth villages and other facilities throughout Israel enrolling more than 16,000 students – will celebrate the first “AMIT Week,” holding several events from October 24 to 31, 2006, to raise funds for its schools, foster young leadership, and promote philanthropy in Israel. Most of the hundreds of people involved are Anglo olim.

“After the war, we have a lot to do,” explained Judith Schwed-Lion, AMIT director of development in Israel. “We have a number of schools to repair in the north, in locations such as Karmiel, Hatzor, Tzfat, Rosh Pina, Haifa and Acco, as well as our schools in Sderot.”

AMIT is providing extensive assistance to students and teachers in an effort to deal quickly with post-war trauma and to facilitate the return to normal life. Ms. Schwed-Lion explains, “We are fixing more than just buildings; we are, in a sense, fixing people. We are offering psychological support, recreation days, and tours around the country as well as special seminars for the teachers to assist them in their work with students who have been through a lot this past summer. All of this costs money. The idea of raising money in Israel, for use in Israel, is a new, growing trend – and we are proud to be part of it”.

AMIT Week Event Coordinator Yaffi Shmidman explains, “We all grew up in strong Jewish, Zionist homes. Raising money for causes in Israel was second nature to our communities. After aliya, we want to continue this tradition of tzedakah for causes in Israel. Living here only strengthens our commitment.”

AMIT Week kicks off with a book launch on Tuesday, October 24, with the debut of A Mosaic of Israel’s Traditions: Unity through Diversity. The book highlights the diversity of Jewish tradition as seen through AMIT students and their families.

The second event will be a reception held at Beit Hanasi, hosted by Israel’s First Lady, Mrs. Gila Katsav, a longtime AMIT member and supporter, on Wednesday, October 25.

Specially catered for young leadership, AMIT will host a wine tasting event in Tel Aviv as its third event. The evening will feature a presentation and wine-tasting tips courtesy of one of Israel’s premier vineyards.

Closing this special week of events will be AMIT’s Annual Dinner on October 31, honoring Phyllis and Ruby Davidman for their lifetime of dedication to AMIT and its mission of providing enhanced education for Israel’s children in need. The evening, will be held at the Jerusalem International Convention Center (Binyanei Ha’Uma), and will feature musical performances by some of AMIT’s most gifted graduates.

AMIT enables Israel's youth to realize their potential and strengthens Israeli society by educating and nurturing children from diverse backgrounds within a framework of academic excellence, religious values and Zionist ideals.

AMIT educates and cares for Israel’s youth, including the most vulnerable. More than three quarters of AMIT students cope with educational, psychological, economic and/or social risk factors. AMIT approaches each child as an individual, maximizing his or her potential, and enabling our students to become vital, productive members of Israeli society. The AMIT schools promote religious tolerance, service to the state and the recognition that every child is blessed with unique talents and abilities. Founded in 1925, AMIT operates more than 60 schools, youth villages, surrogate family residences and other programs, constituting Israel’s only government-recognized network of religious Jewish education incorporating academic and technological studies.
