AMIT SDEROT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES 2003 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PRIZE
October 3, 2003......The AMIT High School in Sderot, a city of 35,000 located in the northwest Negev, has been awarded the 2003 Religious Education Prize by Israel's Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. The AMIT High School was cited for its accomplishments in establishing and promoting religious education for a heterogeneous student population.
The AMIT Sderot High School enrolls 560 boys and girls in grades 7 through 12. Approximately 26 percent of the students are from the former Soviet Union and 17 percent from Ethiopia. In addition to a high school curriculum stressing general technology, computers, biology, physics, communications and environmental studies, AMIT Sderot offers intensive Judaic studies in a Yeshiva program (for boys) and an Ulpana (for girls).
The AMIT Sderot teaching staff was cited by the Ministry for its dedication to the strengthening of the religious education process and for the atmosphere of mutual trust and partnership that has been established with the students. It was noted that the principal, Dan Rahat, and the entire professional staff invest a great deal of personal effort in order to properly respond to each individual student's educational and special needs.
AMIT is the sole provider in Sderot of religious Zionist education on both the elementary and secondary levels. In the five years since AMIT added the Sderot High School to its network of schools and programs the success rate for students passing the bagrut (national matriculation examination) has risen from 20 percent to 70 percent and enrollment has increased significantly. The school also participates in the Ometz project which works to prevent drop-outs and encourages students to graduate with an academic diploma.
Additionally, AMIT Sderot offers a "young leadership" program in which students serve as volunteers in community institutions, youth centers and local elementary schools. These activities contribute to the self-image and self-assurance of the AMIT students, and have a positive influence on the atmosphere of the entire school.
