AMIT at the United Nations
By Micheline Ratzersdorfer
Chair, AMIT Political Action Committee
AMIT enjoys Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status at the UN, specifically in the Department of Public Information (DPI). NGOs are autonomous non-profit and non-party/politically unaffiliated organizations. Your NGO-DPI representative attends weekly briefings on various topics at the UN. Additionally, there is the opportunity to attend occasional committee meeting and UN press briefings.
Attendance at these various activities as well as lunch in the UN cafeteria provides opportunities to "explain Israel" and its present position. In spite of the UN's blatantly anti-Israel/anti-Semitic bias, there is a surprising feeling of admiration and respect for Israel among many grassroots NGO members on a personal basis. These are valuable contacts.
But there is a large number of anti-Israel NOGs, all well funded and some extremely powerful.
We shall endeavor to periodically inform you of some of the activities and programs concerning Israel as well as to provide some background material.
