AMIT Students Protest

70 years and nothing has changed

Dozens of students from the AMIT Science and Technology High School in Kfar Batya stood outside the Swiss Embassy in Tel Aviv this past April to protest the Swiss President's meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad in Geneva. The students also sent a letter to the Swiss President expressing their dismay at his decision to meet with the Iranian President.

"Many historians and scholars believe that history repeats itself," the letter reads. "70 years ago, our nation suffered from a terrible and disastrous event that will forever stain human history....Alas, there are still people who will not grant the Jews their right - people who treat the Jews as a nation not reckoned amongst other nations, but as a cancerous entity, a virus that must be eliminated. Do these claims sound familiar to you?"

AMIT Karmiel Girls Participate in Women's Health March

This past April, AMIT Karmiel 10th grade girls, along with girls from two other Karmiel high schools, participated in a Women's Health March.

This event was part of a larger program called Women in the Galilee which promotes women's health. The program encourages teenage girls to participate as they are at a critical, formative stage in their lives. The goal of the program is to provide information on a wide range of women's health issues and to create a leadership group that will in turn educate others.

AMIT Gutwirth Sderot High School Honored

AMIT Gutwirth High School in Sderot was honored at the Top Teacher of Israel Award ceremony that took place on April 22. The editorial staff of the Yediot Ahronot newspaper presented a special award to the school for its impressive achievement.

A few years ago, the school was on the verge of closure. The school's problems included a high drop-out rate, violence, low bagrut scores and a high faculty turnover rate. After the school became part of the AMIT Network, a revolution led by Principal Matine Ovadiah began. The school went from failure to success. Bagrut success rates climbed from 27% in 2003 to 84% in 2008. This success is all the more significant when taking into consideration that it happened under the constant threat of Kassam rockets and between near continuous "red alerts.”

Meir Cohen, head of the school's parent committee, spoke about the dedication and hard work of the teachers at the school and that the award is a source of pride for all of Sderot.
